Project Name: New Courtyard Lifts at Medway Maritime Hospital
Client: Medway NHS Foundation Trust
Sector: Healthcare
BWA Service: Contract Administrator and Quantity Surveyor
Project Details: The project involved constructing two new bed lifts serving 5 floors of the hospital, one of which was designed for fire evacuation. This was required to improve the lift capacity within the hospital and assisted means of escape in case of fire.
The works included the removal of a section of external wall to the corridor on each of Levels 1 to 5 facing onto an internal courtyard. A 5-storey extension was then constructed projecting out into the courtyard for housing the lifts and lift lobbies.
Because the site was enclosed in a courtyard within the curtilage of the hospital most materials were ether crane lifted over the building and concrete was pumped through it.
The works were undertaken with the hospital in full occupation.
The works took 18 months to complete and cost circa £1.9M.
